Indigenizing Astronomy: Rediscovering our Knowledge
Modern astronomy has transformed our understanding of our place in the universe. Indigenous knowledge travels through time - from time immemorial and from generation to generation - and the night sky has always been an important part of it. But the scientific contributions of Native People have been underestimated and forgotten from school curricula, and many telescope facilities that are located on Native lands often impact local communities negatively. In this lecture, Dr. Laurie Rosseau-Nepton will share her experiences as a professional astronomer and her personal quest to find astronomy, physics and science in the stories of her Nation, Innu. She will demonstrate the beauty of this knowledge and the importance of preserving it for all generations.
