The Carol Reid Early Childhood Education Resource Centre put on a book sale with all the proceeds going towards funding for their centre.
The event had more than 30 volunteers working at the pop-up to help the centre as much as possible.
The event happens three times a year in the E-Concourse at Humber Polytechnic North campus.
“We've had quite the turnout this year, so many people have shown up and bought books from us, which we really appreciate,” said Pina Leo, a lab technologist with the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness.
There were many different types of books for sale at the pop-up event, including teacher resource books, children's books, as well as tables dedicated to soft and hardback books.
All of the books available at the event were donated by students, staff, and faculty just outside where the Early Childhood Development Centre is located on campus.
“We never sell anything over five dollars here. We really want to encourage people to pick up a book and read,” said Pina Leo, director of the centre.
All of the proceeds from the sale go directly to the cause of enhancing the learning, materials and resources available at the Carol Reid Research Centre.
“Events like these really make Humber an exciting place; every time I walk in, I see another event,” said Kai Thompson, an attendee of the book sale.
The Carol Reid Early Childhood Education Resource Centre was established in 1990 by Professor Carol Reid, a longtime faculty member in the Early Childhood Education program.
Reid created the centre to give Early Childhood Education students access to resources, ideas, and support as they develop skills for their field placements.
After Reid's retirement in 2014, colleagues and friends ensured her legacy would continue.
Today, the centre is a space for ECE students, offering a trove of materials, including books, toys, puppets, natural items and loose parts, along with education for their use in childcare settings.
"Through this amazing Centre, we support all students in their practice with children and by doing so we demonstrate the value of showing deep respect and reverence for the child," said Pina Leo, the current director of the centre
The book sale helps to preserve Carol Reid’s legacy and makes sure future educators are equipped with the tools they need to find success in the field.
The next pop-up is scheduled for the summer semester, with organizers hoping for another strong turnout.
