STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Humber student finds niche in fashion management

Fashion Management student said hands-on projects have helped her find her direction.

Second-year Bachelor of Commerce Fashion Management student Ambreka Duncan-Williams did not originally plan to go straight into post-secondary education.

That changed after she attended an open house at Humber Polytechnic to learn more about available programs.

Duncan-Williams enrolled in International Business before switching over to Fashion Management.

She said her program has given her opportunities to connect fashion with other areas of study.

During Humber’s involvement with the FIFA World Cup, Duncan-Williams worked on promotional projects for watch parties.

“We had the task of creating posters that promoted the watch parties,” she said. “This window brought fashion and soccer together.”

For the display, students dressed mannequins incorporating interactive elements, including a camera connected to a television.

“People could walk by and try on jerseys of each of the teams playing,” she said.

Duncan-Williams has developed skills in media, marketing and branding through the program. Another highlight for her was the Humber Fashion History Exhibit.

Duncan-Williams chose the theme of hand-me-downs and displayed a leather jacket with personal significance because it belonged to her mother.

She said one of her biggest challenges has been figuring out which areas of fashion management she wants to focus on.

Her approach has been to remain open to opportunities.

“Always research things you are interested in; never say no to an opportunity even if it doesn't really align with what you think you like to do,” she said.
