This election is arguably the most important American election. This is a timeline of standout moments leading up to today's election.

This election is arguably one of the most consequential American elections. On Nov. 7, 2020, Joe Biden was announced the winner of the 2020 election. This is a timeline of standout moments leading up to today's election. 


2021

Jan. 6, 2021:

Right-wing mob attacks the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the Electoral College vote securing President Joe Biden's victory.    

Jan. 13, 2021:

Donald Trump is impeached for the second time in connection to the Jan. 6 capitol riot.   


2022

March 16, 2022:

Trump says if he were to run in the 2024 election it would be without his former Vice President Mike Pence.  

Nov. 15, 2022:

Trump declares he will run for the presidency in 2024.   


2024

April 15, 2024:

The lawsuit New York v. Trump where the state accuses Trump of falsifying business records on 34 counts begins in court.  

May 30, 2024:

Trump is found guilty of 34 felonies in a scheme to influence the 2016 election through illegal hush money.

June 27, 2024: 

CNN hosts the first 2024 presidential debate for President Joe Biden and Donald Trump.  

July 1, 2024:

The Supreme Court rules in favour in a 6-3 vote in Trump v. The United States, granting immunity from criminal prosecution for Trump due to actions taken while in office. This landmark ruling establishes a new legal precedent regarding presidential immunity.  

July 13, 2024:

Trump is allegedly hit in the ear during a rally in Bulter, Pa., in an assassination attempt.   

July 15, 2024:

Trump announces JD Vance as running mate for Vice President at the Republican National Convention.   

July 21, 2024:

President Joe Biden steps down from the 2024 presidential race and endorses Vice President Kamala Harris.   

Aug. 5, 2024:

Vice President Kamala Harris becomes the official Democratic presidential nominee.   

Aug. 6, 2024:

Harris announces Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice president.  

Sept. 10, 2024:

ABC hosts the second presidential debate, now with Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.   

Sept. 15, 2024:

A second alleged assassination attempt against Trump occurs at a golf course in West Palm Beach, Fla.   

Oct. 1, 2024:

The vice president debate occurs between Walz and Vance.
