Humber students are feeling the burden of rising gas prices and are facing hardships as they find ways to commute to campus and around the GTA.

According to CAA, the average price of a litre of gas has increased by more than 40 cents in the last month as the war in Iran has decreased global fuel supplies. This has only added financial stress to many students’ already tight budgets.

Students who rely on their cars to get to Humber on a day-to-day basis have seen expenses rise massively and is forcing some students to budget the cost of how many days they can afford to go to school.

Many Humber students balance part-time jobs and busy schedules for school and with the cost of gas now makes it more challenging to take care of their essential needs like groceries, tuition, rent and hygiene products.

Some students have started carpooling to school, using transit and leaving their cars at home because of the high gas prices.

While other students try to not make trips if they aren’t needed to save money.

Victoria Campbell, a third-year marketing student, says gas prices have taught how to budget differently throughout the week.

“I used to drive my mom’s car without having to worrying about buying gas but now I limit the days I go to school,” she said.

Gas prices going up, along with other higher costs of living, is making it harder than usual for students for students to remain stable and having a comfortable life because while they try to have good grades in college as well.

Maria Garcia, a second year data analysis student, is going through a challenging time with the gas prices as well and is trying to find other ways to attend school.

“I’ve started using my electric scooter to school instead because gas is very expensive right now,” she said.
